Jaisalmer green belt project 

    Jaisalmer, the golden city, is situated on a limestone massif and surrounded by sand dunes and arid desert. A mecca to tourists from across the world, it's peaceful relaxed atmosphere, economic prices and small family hotels, have guaranteed an excellent holiday to visitors free from city hassle.

      The Greening Jaisalmer Society is devoted to a stable quality enviroment. We have noticed the barren, almost treeless landscapes and the lack of parks and public amenity space safe for children to enjoy playing with parents. This is mainly due to a lack of tree cover and the plan of our new organization is to introduce the young and their elders to an improved natural environment, through volunteer tree planting. All of our work is in full cooperation with the forest department, the municipal authorities and progressive business.

      At the heart of the great Thar desert, we dream that in the future, Jaisalmer will act as a green beacon of hope to demonstrate that it is possible to reverse the worldwide decline of natural resources. Our continued work will help make the city and its surroundings an example of beauty, with pleasant tree lined roads and parks. We look forward to cooperation with schools, the city administration and the forest department who are also doing such valuable works across the deserts of Rajasthan.

    Our actions : 

      The actions of our NGO (Non Governement Organisation) go mainly to 4 activities :
 
       The first is the development of our nursery located in Jaisalmer. For a year we have planted thousands of seeds, and seen the growth of over 40 varieties of trees, shrubs and crop plants. The protection of biodiversity is one of our main objectives, which is why we collect and multiply our plants ONLY from organic seeds. The nursery also serves as a meeting place where locals and volunteers can learn and share their knowledge of nature. We create compost systems to make ourselves more self sufficient. We have thousands of happy worms working for us in this desert area.

       The second is the launch of an ecological farm located 28 km from Jaisalmer. This project, managed by Mohan and his wife Jeti, welcomes volunteers from around the world who wish to practice agriculture based on the principles of permaculture as stated by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. The volunteers work a few hours a day, living in camp conditions out in the desert and you can choose to sleep under the stars. In your free time you can explore this wild place, on foot or by camel. Our camel Romeo, lives at the farm to help with lifting heavy loads but likes to go for walks away from the camp in the cool evenings. Come and discover the life of local people.

      The third action is to offer advice and assistance to farmers in the region, who wish to free themselves from modern agriculture based on  monoculture and the heavy use of chemicals. We offer them assistance from the permaculture design their site, trying to integrate various resources until the establishment of trees from our nursery. Our educational work is important to explain the profits of a transition to a more diversified agriculture less dependent on weather conditions.
We will help the Jaisalmer's tree planning service with plantings trees grown in our nursery along main thoroughfares of the historic city fortres

      The fourth mission is to educate. Trees in this region are of a UTMOST importance as they stabalise soils and provide shade for developing flora/fauna and for wildlife. The greening Jaisalmer Society is now actively promoting environmental awareness in the schools of this beautiful desert city. We are aware of the challenges we face, but we have an opportunity to make a real contribution for the future, with the help of volunteers. We are educating the next generation about the importance of ecology and biodiversity, including programs such as the developing of gardens within schools.

      Any help is welcome. If you have time, you are welcome on our various sites. You have the possibility to stay in our guest house next to our nursery (near Punjab National Bank, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan).
